The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies (2014) -cam-

Plot
Bilbo and the Dwarves watch from the Lonely Mountain as the dragon Smaug destroys Laketown. Bard breaks out of his prison cell and kills Smaug with the black arrow, and the dragon's falling corpse crushes the fleeing Master of Laketown. Bard, chosen as the new leader, decides the Laketown people should seek refuge in the ruins of Dale. Tauriel travels to investigate Mount Gundabad with Legolas. Upon arriving at Erebor, Fili, Kili, Bofur and Oin are informed by Bilbo that Thorin has been afflicted with Smaug's "dragon sickness" as he searched for the Arkenstone. It is revealed that Bilbo actually stole the Arkenstone from Smaug but knows it should be hidden from Thorin.

Meanwhile, Galadriel arrives at Dol Guldur, frees Gandalf, and lifts the fortress's spell of concealment. The Ringwraiths then reveal themselves and converge on Galadriel and the wounded Gandalf. Elrond and Saruman appear and battle the Ringwraiths while Radagast arrives and escorts Gandalf away. Sauron then comes forth and tries to tempt a corrupted Galadriel, who casts Sauron and the Ringwraiths from the fortress with the aid of Saruman. Saruman tells Elrond to take Galadriel to safety while he deals with Sauron. Gandalf leaves Radagast for Erebor to warn of the Orc army approaching Erebor. Azog, marching on Erebor with his vast Orc army, sends Bolg to Mount Gundabad to summon their other army. Legolas and Tauriel witness the march of Bolg's Orc army, bolstered by Goblins and giant bats.

While Bard and the Laketown survivors shelter in Dale, an elf army led by Thranduil arrives with supplies and aid. Thranduil forms an alliance with Bard, wishing to claim a necklace of white gems from the Mountain. In Erebor, Thorin commands the Dwarven company to ready for battle and presents Bilbo with a mithril shirt. Bard travels to Erebor to negotiate and reason with Thorin, who refuses to listen or share any of the treasure. After Gandalf arrives at Dale, Bilbo sneaks out of Erebor to hand the Arkenstone over to Thranduil and Bard. The next day, Bard and Thranduil's armies gather at the gates of Erebor, offering to trade the Arkenstone for gold. Thorin learns of Bilbo's deception and almost kills him, before Gandalf makes Thorin release and let him climb back down to Gandalf. As Thranduil's and Bard's forces begin their assault on Erebor, Thorin's cousin Dáin arrives with a Dwarf army and prepares to attack the Elves and Men before Azog's army makes its appearance and converges on Dale and the Dwarves. With the Orcs outnumbering Dain's army, Thranduil's and Bard's forces join the battle.

Inside Erebor, Thorin, refusing to fight, falls into a hallucinatory nightmare before finally regaining his sanity and leading his company into battle. While the other Dwarves of the company aid Dain's forces, Thorin rides towards Ravenhill with Dwalin, Fíli, and Kíli to kill Azog and force the Orc army to retreat. Meanwhile, Tauriel arrives at Dale and tries to stop Thranduil from returning to Mirkwood, but is banished. Legolas and Tauriel leave to warn Thorin of Bolg's approaching army with Bilbo following them using the ring.

At Ravenhill, Thorin, Fili, Kili and Dwalin fight a troop of Goblins shortly after Bilbo arrives and warns them of an attack. Thorin tells Fili and Kili to inspect a tower but Fili gets caught and killed by Azog. Legolas and Tauriel arrive at Ravenhill. Bolg tries to kill Tauriel when Kili comes to protect her, sacrificing himself in the process. Meanwhile, Thorin is fighting Azog. While fighting Bolg, Legolas throws Orcrist to Thorin and saves the Dwarf King from Azog. Azog and Thorin fight on a frozen lake while Legolas battles Bolg on top of a crumbling tower, eventually killing him. Bilbo, who was knocked unconscious by Bolg, wakes to see the Great Eagles appear, carrying Radagast and Beorn into battle, after which the Orc armies are quickly decimated. Thorin kills Azog but is left mortally wounded in the process. He makes peace with Bilbo before dying.

On Thranduil's suggestion, Legolas leaves to meet with a Dunedain ranger while Tauriel mourns Kili. Bilbo bids farewell to the remaining Dwarves and journeys home to the Shire with Gandalf. As the two part, Gandalf admits to his knowledge of the ring and cautions Bilbo he will be watching him. Bilbo returns to Bag End to find his belongings being auctioned off by the Sackville-Bagginses, who assumed he died, though Bilbo clarifies his identity. Sixty years later, Bilbo, while reflecting on the past journey, receives a visit from Gandalf and happily runs to greet his old friend.

Penguins of Madagascar (2014)

Plot

In Antarctica, three young penguins, Skipper (Tom McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller), and Rico (Conrad Vernon), rescue an egg from hungry leopard seals and set themselves adrift on an iceberg. From the egg hatches Private (Christopher Knights) and the four become a team. A decade later, directly after the events of Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, the Penguins depart from the circus and celebrate Private's birthday by breaking into Fort Knox so that Private can buy Cheesy Dibbles, a discontinued product, from their break room vending machine. However, Private begins to feel unimportant to the team. While Skipper is the leader and strategist, Kowalski is the brains, and Rico the arsenal specialist, Private is continually referred to as just being a cute face and doesn't have any remarkable skills.

The Penguins are suddenly kidnapped in the vending machine and flown to a submarine base in Venice. There, the Penguins meet Dave (John Malkovich), a villainous octopus who disguises himself under the human alias of Dr. Octavius Brine. Dave used to be adored in the Central Park Zoo, until the penguins arrived and unknowingly stole his shine. The octopus was then shipped to other zoos but his fame was stolen each time by a penguin shine. Embittered, Dave now wants revenge on the penguins. Rico swallows Dave's snow globe collection along with a canister of green goo, and the Penguins escape. The Penguins are then chased through the canals and streets of Venice by Dave's squid henchmen. Cornered in an alley, the Penguins are saved by the "North Wind", an elite undercover inter-species task force. The group comprises their leader, a gray wolf named Classified (Benedict Cumberbatch), a demolitionist harp seal named Short Fuse (Ken Jeong), a muscular polar bear named Corporal (Peter Stormare), and an intelligent snowy owl named Eva (Annet Mahendru), with whom Kowalski becomes smitten.

The Penguins are flown in to one of the North Wind's secret bases where the agency reveals their purpose is to help animals who can't help themselves and that they've been tracking Dave for a long time, trying to bring him to justice. Dave hacks into the North Wind's communications and reveals to the group he has a lot more of his serum than just the canister the Penguins stole. Dubbing it the Medusa Serum, he aims to use it on all the penguins that stole his fame around the world. Though the Penguins want to work alongside the North Wind, they don't believe the Penguins of being capable allies and tranquilize them, shipping the four on a plane to their "most remote base" (which happens to be back on Madagascar). The Penguins wake up mid-flight and vow to save their species without the North Wind's help.

Ejecting from the plane and landing in the Sahara, the penguins make their way to Shanghai (that they mistake for Dublin) where they learn penguins are already being kidnapped from zoos everywhere. Using Dave's snow globe collection Rico swallowed earlier, the Penguins discover he's going to hit Shanghai next and strategize a plan to stop Dave's scheme. During the plan's execution, Private once again feels unimportant when he is made the diversion. The Penguins' plan works and they capture Dave before the North Wind can. However, Dave manages to escape and succeeds in kidnapping the zoo's penguins, including Private. The Penguins attempt to chase Dave's submarine with the North Wind's high-tech aircraft, but accidentally activate the self-destruct. The two teams track Private with a previously implanted homing device to a remote island. Meanwhile, Dave demonstrates for Private that the Medusa Serum, when blasted in a ray, will turn its target into a disfigured monster physically and mentally. He plans to use it on all of the penguins he's captured so the public will be repelled by their appearance instead of adored.

On the island, Classified and Skipper argue over the best way to stop Dave, but Skipper finally relents when he realizes Classified's leadership is what's best for Private's escape, despite Kowalski and Rico's objections. The Penguins cause a diversion for Dave's guards while the North Wind sneaks in and corners Dave, only to be ambushed. The Penguins are also captured upon realizing Classified's plan failed. With the rest of the Penguins captured, Dave demonstrates his Medusa Serum ray by using it on Private. It appears to disintegrate him at first, but, unbeknownst to the characters, Private managed to escape his bonds at the last minute with a paperclip he had swallowed previously. While Dave sets a course for New York City and corrals his penguins into a large group, Private rescues the North Wind. However, while Private wants to rescue the others, the North Wind plans to flee and return to their base for more equipment before facing Dave again. Despite their attempted persuasion to join them, Private chooses to do as Skipper would and heads back to free the penguins.

Dave's submarine arrives in New York City and he blasts the penguins, including Skipper, Kowalski, and Rico, with his mutation ray. After doing so, he releases them to the people who are terrified with their monstrous appearance and behavior. Private, seeing he is too late, finds Skipper, Kowalski, and Rico, and snaps them out of their disfigured mental state. They deduce that by reversing the ray, they can reverse its effects. However, while Dave had the Medusa Serum, the Penguins would need something incredibly cute. Private opts to use himself as the ray's source of power, accepting whatever effects doing so would have on him. Unfortunately, the remote for the ray runs out of batteries and Dave, discovering their plan, has sent his henchmen after them. Rico heads out to find batteries while Skipper and Kowalski defend against the squids, finding themselves outnumbered. The North Wind returns and destroys Dave's submarine before being caught by a pest control unit called in to take care of the monstrous penguins. Rico returns with batteries and a new bag of Organic Cheesy Dibbles. Skipper just manages to replace the batteries in the remote before Dave knocks it away. Just before being caught by pest control, Skipper sends a single Dibble flying towards the remote and hits the activation button. Having attached Dave's snow globes to the ray to refract the beam, Private's cuteness is harnessed and reverts every penguin back to their original appearance.

However, as the side effects of being used in the ray, Private has been tinted pink and grown antlers. Despite his strange new look, the Penguins show their gratitude and newfound respect for Private. Dave has also been made cute by the ray and stuck in a snow globe where he is admired by a little girl (Angie Wu). Finally seeing one another as equals, Classified promises to grant the Penguins anything they want. In addition to Kowalski getting a kiss from Eva, the Penguins are given their own jetpacks. The four Penguins then fly off above the clouds looking for their next adventure.

In a mid-credits scene, the Penguins return to the circus and plug Mort (Andy Richter) into the ray and use him to revert Private back to normal. Mort doesn't appear to show any side effects from the ray until he manages to swallow King Julien (Danny Jacobs) whole.

Big Hero 6 (2014)

Hiro Hamada is a 14-year-old robotics genius who lives in the futuristic city of San Fransokyo and spends his time participating in back-alley robot fights. His older brother Tadashi, worried that Hiro is wasting his potential, takes him to the robotics lab at his university, where Hiro meets Tadashi's friends, GoGo, Wasabi, Honey Lemon, and Fred as well as Baymax, a personal healthcare robot Tadashi created. Amazed, Hiro decides to apply to the school. He presents his project—microbots, swarms of tiny robots that can link together in any arrangement imaginable—at an annual exhibition to gain admission. Professor Callaghan, head of the program, is impressed, and Hiro gets in. The President of Krei Tech, a prestigious robotics company, Alistair Krei tries to buy the technology from him. Callaghan successfully advises Hiro against trusting him. When a fire breaks out at the university, Tadashi rushes in to rescue Callaghan, but the building explodes and both are killed. As a result of losing his brother, Hiro secludes himself from others.

One day, Hiro accidentally activates Baymax, who follows one of his microbots to an abandoned warehouse. There, the two discover that someone has been mass-producing Hiro's bots; they are attacked by a masked man who is controlling the bots. Realizing this man has stolen his project, Hiro decides to catch him, and upgrades Baymax with armor and a battle chip containing various karate moves. After the masked man attacks Hiro, Baymax, GoGo, Wasabi, Honey Lemon and Fred, Hiro develops superhero suits for everyone and they form a superhero team. Fred believes the masked man to be Alistair Krei, and thinks that he started the fire to steal the bots after Hiro refused to sell them. Convinced, the group then starts to investigate Krei Tech.

The group discovers a former lab of Krei Tech that was experimenting with teleportation technology. The test went awry when the test pilot vanished inside an unstable portal. The masked man is revealed not to be Krei, but instead Professor Callaghan, who stole Hiro's bots and used them to escape the fire. Realizing that Tadashi died in vain, Hiro angrily removes Baymax's healthcare chip, leaving him with only the battle chip, and orders him to kill Callaghan. Baymax almost does so until Honey manages to insert the healthcare chip back in, restoring Baymax. The others refuse to help Hiro, with Wasabi stating that they never agreed to become killers. Angry at his friends, Hiro goes home, and breaks down when Baymax asks him if killing Callaghan will make him feel better. To soften Hiro's loss, Baymax plays multiple humorous clips of Tadashi running tests on him during Baymax's development. Hiro realizes that killing Callaghan is not what Tadashi would've wanted and makes amends with his friends.

The group discovers that the test pilot was Callaghan's daughter Abigail; Callaghan is seeking revenge on Krei whom he blames for his daughter's death. Callaghan attempts to kill Krei with the reactivated portal. The team foils the plan by destroying the microbots, but the portal remains active. Baymax detects life signs of Abigail, and he and Hiro rush in to save her. On their way out, Baymax's armor is damaged and he realizes the only way to save Hiro and Abigail is to propel them back through the portal with his rocket fist. Hiro refuses to leave him, but Baymax insists until Hiro tearfully gives in. Hiro and Abigail make it back, while Callaghan is arrested.

Sometime later, Hiro discovers Baymax's healthcare chip (which contains his entire personality) clenched in his rocket fist. Delighted, he rebuilds Baymax and they happily reunite. The six friends continue their exploits through the city, fulfilling Tadashi's dream of helping those in need.

During the end credits, it is shown through newspaper headlines that Hiro has been awarded a grant from the university and a building is dedicated to Tadashi. In a post-credits scene, Fred accidentally opens a secret door in his family mansion and finds superhero gear inside. His father, a retired superhero arrives, stating that they have a lot to talk about as they embrace.

The Book of Life (2014)

A museum chaperone named Mary Beth takes a group of troubled children on a tour and tells them about the famous legends and myths of Mexican folklore. She proceeds to tell them the story of the Mexican town of San Angel from the Book of Life, which holds every story in the world.

The spirits La Muerte, ruler of the Land of the Remembered and Xibalba, ruler of the Land of the Forgotten, appear at San Angel's Day of the Dead festival where they set up a wager after seeing two boys, Manolo and Joaquín, competing over a free-spirited girl named María. La Muerte bets that Manolo will marry María, while Xibalba bets on Joaquín. If La Muerte wins, Xibalba can no longer interfere in mortal affairs, but if Xibalba wins, he and La Muerte will switch domains. Later, María sets free a herd of animals due to be slaughtered, much to the chagrin of her father General Posada, who sends Maria away to a private boarding school in Spain to learn to behave. While seeing her off, Manolo gives her a baby pig, Chuy, while she gives him a new guitar which has "Always play from the heart"[6] engraved on it.

Years pass as Manolo is trained by his father Carlos to become a skilled bullfighter while Joaquín becomes the town hero with the help of Xibalba's Medal of Eternal Life. On the day that María returns, a celebration is held in town culminating in Manolo's first bullfight. During the fight, Manolo refuses to kill the bull, disappointing his father and the crowd but delighting María. That night, María learns her father is arranging her marriage to Joaquín so that the hero would stay and protect San Angel from the bandit Chakal, but she is conflicted by her feelings for Manolo. María and Manolo secretly meet and profess their love for each other, but they are interrupted when a snake, sent by Xibalba, bites María and seemingly kills her. Despondent, Manolo is tricked by Xibalba who offers him a way to see Maria again, as he summons the snake to inflict a double bite which kills Manolo.

Manolo travels to the Land of the Remembered where he reunites with his mother, Carmen and his illustrious deceased family members. They travel to La Muerte's castle, but find it now occupied by Xibalba who explains the bet and that the snake only gave María enough venom to put her into a coma, but it gave Manolo enough to kill him. Once María awoke, she learned of Manolo's death and decides to accept Joaquín's proposal for the sake of the town. Manolo, Carmen and Manolo's grandfather, Luis travel to the Cave of Souls in order to reach the Land of the Forgotten. After accomplishing a pair of dangerous tasks, Manolo's pure heart allows him and his family to enter the Cave, where they meet the Candle Maker, who oversees the lives of everybody in the living world. After seeing that Manolo's story in the Book of Life is empty (due to Xibalba's meddling) and can be rewritten by Manolo's own actions, the Candle Maker takes the group to the Land of the Forgotten. There, Manolo finds La Muerte and exposes Xibalba's cheating. Xibalba appears and agrees to give Manolo life again if he can face his greatest fear, which Xibalba has manifest as every single bull his family ever fought.

In the living world, Chakal learns that Joaquín has the Medal of Eternal Life and leads his army of bandits to San Angel on the day of the wedding. The bandit kills Carlos, who joins his family as they watch Manolo's challenge. Manolo apologizes to the grudge-filled spirit to forgive his family's transgressions and it dissolves peacefully away. Impressed, the deities grant Manolo his life back and send him and his family's spirits to the living world to defeat Chakal. After saving the town, Joaquín returns the medal to Xibalba, while Manolo and María wed happily as Xibalba and La Muerte reconcile.

At the end, as the now-enlightened children leave the museum, Mary Beth and a security guard introduced earlier reveal themselves as La Muerte and Xibalba, and the Candle Maker reminds everyone to write their own stories.

Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014) -cam-

Plot

In 1300 BCE, Moses, a general and member of the royal family, prepares to attack the Hittite army with Prince Ramesses. Ramesses' father Seti I tells the two men of a recent prophecy in which one (of Moses and Ramesses) will save the other and become a leader. During the attack on the Hittites, Moses saves Ramesses' life, leaving both men troubled. Later, Moses is sent to the city of Pithom to meet with the Viceroy Hegep, who oversees the Hebrew slaves. Upon his arrival, he encounters the slave Joshua and is appalled by the horrific conditions of the slaves. Shortly afterwards, Moses meets Nun, who informs him of his true lineage; he is the child of Hebrew parents who was sent by his sister Miriam to be raised by Pharaoh's daughter. Moses is stunned at the revelation and leaves angrily. However, two Hebrews also overhear Nun's story and report their discovery to Hegep.

Seti dies soon after Moses' return to Memphis, and Ramesses becomes the new Pharaoh (Ramesses II). Hegep arrives to reveal Moses' true identity, but Ramesses is conflicted about whether to believe the story. At the urging of Queen Tuya, he interrogates the servant Miriam, who denies being Moses' sister. When Ramesses threatens to cut off Miriam's arm, Moses comes to her defence, revealing he is a Hebrew. Although Tuya wants Moses to be put to death, Ramesses decides to send him into exile. Before leaving Egypt, Moses meets with his birth mother and Miriam, who refer to him by his birth name of Moishe. Following a journey into the desert, Moses comes to Midian where he meets Zipporah and her father, Jethro. Moses becomes a shepherd, marries Zipporah and has a son Gershom.

Nine years later, Moses gets injured during a rockslide. He comes face to face with a burning bush and a boy called Malak, who serves as a representation of God. While recovering, Moses confesses his past to Zipporah and reveals what God has asked him to do. This drives a wedge between the couple, because Zipporah fears he will leave their family. After he arrives in Egypt, Moses reunites with Nun and Joshua, as well as meeting his brother Aaron for the first time. Using his military skills, he trains the slaves in the art of war. The Hebrews start attacking the Egyptians, prompting Ramesses to execute slaves until Moses gives himself up. Malak appears to Moses and explains that ten plagues will affect Egypt. All the water in the land turns to blood, and the Egyptians are further afflicted by the arrival of frogs, lice, and flies. Moses returns to confront Ramesses, demanding the Hebrews be released from servitude. Ramesses refuses to listen, insisting that to free the slaves would be economically impossible. The plagues of the death of livestock, boils, hail and thunder, locusts, and darkness continue to affect the Egyptians. While conversing with Malak, Moses is horrified at learning the tenth plague will be the death of all firstborn children. The Hebrews protect themselves by covering their doors with the blood of lambs, as instructed to them by Moses. Ramesses is devastated over his son's death and relents, telling Moses and the Hebrews to leave.

During the exodus from Egypt, the Hebrews follow Moses' original path through the desert and towards the Red Sea. Still grieving for his son, Ramesses decides to go after the Hebrews with his army. After making their way across the rocky mountains, Moses and the Hebrews arrive at the edge of the sea, uncertain about what to do. Moses flings his sword into the water, which begins to recede. Ramesses and his army pursue the Hebrews, but Moses stays behind to confront them. The Red Sea reverts to its normal state, drowning the majority of the Egyptians (crossing the Red Sea). Moses survives and makes his way back to the Hebrews. Ramesses is revealed to have survived, but he is distraught over the destruction of his army. Moses leads the Hebrews back to Midian, where he reunites with Zipporah and Gershom. At Mount Sinai, Moses transcribes the Ten Commandments.

Interstellar (2014)

In the future, crop blight has caused civilization to regress into a failing agrarian society. Former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) runs a farm with his family. Murphy (Mackenzie Foy), Cooper's 10-year-old daughter, believes her room is haunted by a ghost trying to communicate with her. They discover the "ghost" is an unknown intelligence sending coded messages using gravitational waves, leaving binary coordinates in the dust that direct them to a secret NASA installation led by Professor John Brand (Michael Caine). Brand reveals that a wormhole, apparently created by an alien intelligence, leads to new planets that may offer hope for survival. NASA's "Lazarus missions" have identified three potentially habitable worlds orbiting the black hole Gargantua: Miller, Edmunds, and Mann, named after the astronauts who surveyed them. Brand recruits Cooper to pilot the spacecraft Endurance to recover the astronauts' data; if one of the planets is habitable, humanity will follow on space stations. Cooper's departure devastates Murphy, and they part on bad terms.

On Endurance, Cooper joins Brand's daughter, biologist Amelia (Anne Hathaway); scientists Romilly (David Gyasi) and Doyle (Wes Bentley); and robots TARS and CASE. They enter the wormhole and head to Miller, but discover the planet is so close to Gargantua that it experiences severe gravitational time dilation: each hour on the surface equals seven years away from Gargantua. They descend to the planet, which proves inhospitable as it is covered by a shallow ocean roiled by enormous waves. As Amelia attempts to recover Miller's data, a wave hits, killing Doyle and delaying the shuttle's departure. When the others return to Endurance, 23 years have passed.

On Earth, the adult Murphy (Jessica Chastain) is now a NASA scientist assisting Brand with the equation that will enable NASA to launch its massive space stations via gravity. On his deathbed, Brand admits he already solved the problem and determined the project is impossible; he covered up his findings to keep hope alive and put his faith in a "Plan B": using fertilized eggs aboard Endurance to start humanity anew. However, Murphy concludes that Brand's equation could work with additional data from a black hole's singularity.

Low on fuel, Endurance can only visit one more planet before returning to Earth. After a tense vote, the team selects Mann's planet, as Mann is still transmitting. However, they find it to be icy and inhospitable; Mann (Matt Damon) always knew Plan B was the mission's true goal, and faked data about his planet's viability so Endurance would rescue him. Mann breaks Cooper's spacesuit visor and leaves him to die, and flees to Endurance on a shuttle; Romilly is killed by a bomb Mann set to protect his secret. Amelia rescues Cooper on the other shuttle, and they arrive at Endurance in time to witness Mann docking improperly, causing an explosion that kills him and seriously damages Endurance, but Cooper uses the shuttle to get the spacecraft under control.

Nearly out of fuel, Cooper and Amelia plan to slingshot Endurance around Gargantua on a course toward Edmunds. TARS and Cooper detach into the black hole, sacrificing themselves to collect data on the singularity and to propel Amelia by dropping the ship's mass. They emerge in an extra-dimensional "tesseract", where time appears as a spatial dimension and portals show glimpses of Murphy's childhood bedroom at various times. Cooper realizes the alien beings are actually more advanced humans who have mastered the higher dimensions and constructed this space so he can communicate with Murphy and save humanity. Using gravitational waves, Cooper projects TARS's encoded data on the singularity into the adult Murphy's wristwatch, allowing her to solve Brand's equation and evacuate Earth. Cooper awakens years later aboard a NASA space station and reunites with the now elderly Murphy (Ellen Burstyn), who has led humanity's exodus. Murphy advises Cooper to rejoin Amelia, who has begun preparations on Edmunds's planet.

Gone Girl (2014)

Plot

The day of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne returns home to find that his wife Amy is missing. Her disappearance receives heavy press coverage, as Amy was the inspiration for her parents' popular Amazing Amy children's books. Suspicions arise that Nick murdered her, and his awkward behavior is interpreted by the media as characteristic of a sociopath.
Flashbacks reveal that Nick and Amy's marriage has disintegrated; both lost their jobs in the recession and moved from New York City to Missouri. Nick has become lazy, distant, and unfaithful. Detective Rhonda Boney uncovers evidence of financial troubles and domestic disputes, a report indicating that Amy wanted to purchase a gun, and poorly concealed evidence of a struggle. She also finds a medical report indicating that Amy is pregnant, of which Nick denies knowledge.
Through clues left for Nick by Amy, it is revealed that Amy planned to frame Nick for her murder by ingratiating herself into local life, faking her pregnancy, and fabricating a diary describing her fear of her husband. She has changed her appearance and is hiding in a distant campground, believing Nick will be convicted and executed for her murder.
Nick hires Tanner Bolt, a defense attorney who specializes in defending husbands accused of killing their wives, to prove his innocence. Nick meets Amy's ex-boyfriend Tommy O'Hara, who claims Amy framed him for rape. He also approaches another ex-boyfriend, the wealthy Desi Collings - against whom Amy previously filed a restraining order - but Desi refuses to reveal any details.
When Amy's money is stolen by her neighbors from the motel she is hiding in, she calls Desi and convinces him that she ran away from Nick, fearing for her life. He agrees to hide her in his lake house, which is equipped with surveillance cameras. Nick convinces his twin sister, Margo, of his innocence. After Nick's student and mistress reveals their affair at a press conference, Nick appears on a talk show to apologize for his failures as a husband in the hope of luring Amy, swearing he is not a murderer. His performance improves his public image and rekindles Amy's feelings for him. She uses the lake house's cameras to her advantage, making it appear as though Desi kidnapped and abused her. She seduces and kills Desi during sex, then returns home covered in blood, naming Desi as her captor and rapist, clearing Nick of suspicion.
Amy tells Nick the truth, saying that the man she watched pleading for her return was the man she wants him to become again. Nick shares this with Boney, Bolt and Margo, but has no way to prove Amy's guilt.
